BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL (WITH OR WITHOUT BREAST LIFT AND/OR FAT TRANSFER)
The goal of breast implant removal surgery is to remove breast implants +/- the fibrous tissue around them in patients who have undergone breast augmentation or breast reconstruction. During these procedures, Dr. Rivera-Serrano may also remove silicone material from implant leaks and implant capsules (capsulectomy), which is the scar tissue that forms around the implants. Not infrequently, the capsule is soft and does not need to be removed (unless the patient requests it). However, the capsule sometimes becomes hard, causing pain and discomfort (“capsular contracture”). This is often a reason to have the implants and capsule removed. Another reason to have your implants removed is concerns of autoimmune diseases or other symptoms by some patients.
When implants are removed, some “sagginess” is unavoidable unless a concomitant (or later) breast lift procedure (with or without fat grafting) is carried out. The breast fat transfer can restore to some degree the lost volume of the implant but is never as powerful in terms of both volume and upper pole fullness (cleavage or “perkiness”). Nevertheless, fat grafting can be repeated to further assist in restoring the volume of the breasts. A personal consultation will determine what is best for you.
