NOSE SURGERY (RHINOPLASTY)

Rhinoplasty, often referred to by patients as a “nose job,” improves facial harmony, balance, and the proportions or shape of your nose.  It may also improve a nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, wide, drooping, or upturned or nostrils that are large or wide.

Rhinoplasty may also improve impaired breathing and poor nasal airflow caused by structural deformities in the nose, such as septal deviations. Dr. Rivera-Serrano has particular expertise in nose functional surgery to improve breathing due to his extensive and unique training background in otolaryngology (ENT) surgery and understanding of nasal anatomy. Surgeries that include improvement in nasal breathing are more technically complex and may require ear or rib cartilage grafting, especially if a nasal surgery was done before. Rhinoplasty can typically be performed after 16 years of age in females and 17-18 years old in males unless the breathing difficulties are significantly affecting the quality of life, in which case surgery can be done earlier in life.

A rhinoplasty can change the size of your nose to improve the facial balance, your nose width or any deviations, or the size and position of the nostrils. It can also enhance your lateral nose profile by reducing or eliminating visible humps or depressions on the bridge. If you desire a more symmetrical nose, keep in mind that everyone’s face is asymmetric to some degree. Therefore, results after rhinoplasty may not turn out to be completely symmetric, although the goal is to improve the facial balance and proportions. A personal consultation will determine what is best for you.

You feel your nasal tip is too wide or bulbous or droopy. You have a dorsal hump. Your nose severely deviates. You cannot breathe well through your nose. You want aesthetic improvement but are not set with a particular nose shape.

You want your nose to look like someone else, such as a celebrity. You know “exactly” how you want your nose, and you know you will not be satisfied with any other result. You want a “perfect” nose. You cannot tolerate imperfections or a nose that, after surgery, may still have some deviations. You have a fixation with your nose. You think that having a nose job will fix your relationships, life, or fortune. Unfortunately, rhinoplasty results cannot be 100% predictable, and changes can occur over time given that human tissues are dynamic and there are many intrinsic (e.g., cartilage memory, scarring forces) and extrinsic forces (e.g., gravity) that can alter the results. Therefore, if you have unrealistic expectations, there is a high chance of dissatisfaction after surgery.
