ARM LIFT (BRACHIOPLASTY)

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, an inner arm lift, is a procedure designed to remove skin and fat from the upper arms. It reshapes the upper arm to tighten loose skin and remove fat that frequently has a “batwing” appearance.  This procedure is ideal for patients who have undergone significant weight loss and have residual skin and fat. The operation’s primary objective is to remove the skin and, secondarily, fat. Liposuction is almost always carried out as well. Removal of skin is almost always done in the inner posterior aspect of the arm to hide the scars. Depending on the amount of excess, the excision can extend into the forearm, axilla, chest, or lower aspect of the breasts (extended arm lift). After a brachioplasty, a compression garment is temporarily used to help the skin contract, decrease swelling and recovery time, and decrease the chances of seromas (collections of fluid). Every year, thousands of people undergo this procedure. A personal consultation will determine what is best for you.

You are uncomfortable wearing short sleeves or raising your arm. You are distressed by the sagging skin in your upper arms. The joy of exercising is limited by the sagging and constant swinging of the extra skin in your upper arms. Your self-confidence would improve from this procedure.

Arm lifts are primarily intended to remove skin and not fat, although some liposuction is also commonly carried out during the procedure.

One caveat in terms of body contouring surgeries from Dr. Rivera-Serrano is that approximately a year after surgery, it may look like there is still some loose skin in the area that was operated on. Nevertheless, this is not anywhere near the amount prior to surgery. This is extremely frequent due to skin relaxation. He always tells patients to remember how tight the area felt immediately after surgery. This was, in turn, because he always removes as much skin as technically possible and hence the tightness.
