BODY CONTOURING AFTER WEIGHT LOSS IN MIAMI

A group of tailored operations frequently done after bariatric surgery is commonly referred to as body contouring after massive weight loss. This set of individualized operations is aimed at reducing excess skin and fat left behind after major weight loss. The main goal is to restore attractive proportions and improve physical function by removing sagging skin (and some residual fat in some cases) around the face, neck, upper arms, chest, breasts, abdomen, flanks, hips, pubis, buttocks, and thighs. Although these types of procedures do leave scars, most patients find them an acceptable tradeoff for an improved function and appearance.

Body contouring procedures may include:

  • Arm lift: Improves sagging of the upper arms
  • Breast lift: Improves sagging and flattening of breasts
  • Gynecomastia correction (in men): Improves excess skin and fat in the chest
  • Upper body lift: Improves mid-back rolls and some excess skin or rolls in the upper abdomen
  • Lower body lift: Improves sagging of the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and pubis
  • Thigh lift: Improves sagging of the thighs
  • Tummy tuck: Improves excess skin over the abdomen rolls and folds
  • Facelift: Improves sagging of the mid-face, jowls, and neck
  • Necklift: Improves sagging of the neck

You have sagging skin in many areas, such as the chest, breasts, arms, abdomen, back, and/or thighs. You have experienced significant weight loss from diet and exercise or bariatric surgery. Your weight has stabilized following the weight loss, which is typically about 18 months in cases of post-bariatric surgery (one year to lose the weight and six months of stable weight). If you’ve lost weight with diet and exercise, you want to have at least six months of stable weight. After body contouring surgery, a compression garment is temporarily used to help the skin contract, decrease swelling and recovery time, and decrease the chances of seromas (collections of fluids). Every year, thousands of people undergo these procedures. A personal consultation will determine what is best for you.

One caveat in terms of body contouring surgeries from Dr. Rivera-Serrano is that approximately a year after surgery, it may look like there is still some loose skin in the area that was operated on. Nevertheless, this is not anywhere near the amount prior to surgery. This is extremely frequent due to skin relaxation. He always tells patients to remember how tight the area felt immediately after surgery. This was, in turn, because he always removes as much skin as technically possible and hence the tightness.
