NECK LIPOSUCTION SURGERY

This procedure improves the neck contours by using a liposuction technique. The fat is aspirated, and the neck is sculpted to the degree that is allowed by your neck anatomy. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia, and the downtime is minimal. We do recommend using a support garment (“jaw bra”) for a few weeks after surgery. There is a high degree of satisfaction, and the changes can range from mild-moderate to very significant, depending on each individual’s underlying anatomy. Why is this? Because of the complexity of the neck anatomy. With submental liposuction, we can only remove fat outside a superficial neck muscle called the platysma. Nevertheless, some people also have fat deep in the platysma muscle. It is impossible before surgery (not even by a good physical exam) to determine how much of the fat is superficial or deep to these muscles. Despite this, neck liposuction can be an excellent treatment to improve the neck contours due to the simplicity, quick recovery time, less expense, and ability to do it with only local anesthesia in the office.

A critically important concept to know is that the result of any liposuction relies on having skin with good elasticity. If the elasticity is good, the skin is going to contract, redrape, and take the shape of a new sculpted area in a very smooth and natural way. On the other hand, if the elasticity of not good, the fat will be mostly gone, and the skin may hang loose and form folds.

A note from Dr. Rivera-Serrano on Submental liposuction vs. Kybella, Coolsculpting, or other medical treatments. In my opinion, and in general, submental liposuction is far superior. Why? Because liposuction typically only takes one session, has low complications, can be done under local anesthesia, and has much quicker results. In contrast, all the other so-called less invasive treatments require multiple visits, and the results are less reliable. If you add up the multiple sessions required, they end up being more expensive than surgery. Moreover, there are some devices associated with the paradoxical growth of fat (this means that instead of the fat being vanished, it increases). In my experience, results with Kybella show that most patients require about four treatments, the injections are painful to most people, and there could be significant swelling for several days after treatment. WHEN TO AVOID PLASTIC SURGERY

-You do not have time to recover. In general, for facial surgery, we recommend three months between surgery and a special or social (red carpet) event as a safety net. However, most people look presentable in normal social situation in three weeks, and oftentimes earlier. For body procedures, recovery can be from a few days (e.g. liposuction) to two to three weeks (tummy tuck or BBL). For most procedures, heavy activity such as exercise should be avoided for 3 weeks.

Complications are not common; however, they do occasionally happen, and delayed healing cannot be 100% avoided. This timeline is necessary in order to allow most of the swelling to go away and the results and tissues to appear natural, especially if the surgery is in a visible area.

-You want a perfect result because you will only be satisfied with perfection, and you know you will not be happy otherwise.

-You want perfect symmetry.

-You are taking blood thinners for medical conditions or immunosuppressants.

-You are a current smoker, or a current passive smoker (live with a partner that smokes next you)

-You are overweight or obese. Typically, we recommend not having surgery if your Body Mass Index is above 32-34, with the exception of some liposuction procedures (Link to: Liposuction for people with high BMI’s (obesity)). Use this link to calculate your BMI. 

-You are doing it for someone else or fitting an ideal image. Plastic surgery is a personal decision, and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.
