Dr. Rivera-Serrano is a top expert in Miami, having performed thousands of cases. In our gallery and Atlas of Facial Reconstruction, you’ll find before-and-after examples of his work across various facial areas, using various techniques. This is one of the most extensive, if not the most extensive, online atlases of facial reconstruction in the world, with all cases performed by Dr. Rivera-Serrano, demonstrating exceptional results.

What is Skin Cancer Reconstruction?

Once cancer is removed from the facial area, some surgical wounds might be too deep and leave pits and scars. Skin cancer reconstruction is a restorative surgery performed to reduce the impact of this scarring and help the skin heal more aesthetically.

Depending on the defect’s size, shape, and placement, Dr. Rivera-Serrano uses various reconstruction methods, such as flaps or grafts, to cover and repair the area.

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting skin cancer reconstruction in Miami Beach with Dr. Rivera-Serrano is to schedule a consultation at Rivera Plastic Surgery. On the day of your appointment, Dr. Rivera-Serrano will evaluate your wounds and scars from the skin cancer removal surgery and inquire more about your medical history, aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations. As he carries out the examination, he will recommend the best techniques for your wounds, as well as the risks and benefits of the surgery and the recovery timeline.

Once you both agree to move forward, Dr. Rivera-Serrano will create a surgical plan for you. You can take this plan to the patient concierge for pricing and scheduling.

What to Expect on the Day of Skin Cancer Reconstruction Surgery

On the day of your skin cancer reconstruction procedure, Dr. Rivera-Serrano and his staff will welcome you and get you settled in the surgical suite. A member of the staff will review your surgical plan to ensure you are fully comfortable to proceed. Once you give the go-ahead, you will require either local or general anesthesia to be administered for your comfort and pain management.

The procedure required for skin cancer reconstruction depends entirely on the area, depth, shape, and placement of the facial defects.

The various techniques include:

  • Primary closure, in which the skin of the surgical wound is pulled together and sutured
  • Skin Grafting, in which skin from another area of the body is used to cover up the wound created by the removal surgery
  • Flap reconstruction, where nearby skin is moved to conceal the wound created after the removal

The patient’s wound areas will be prepared before surgery. This includes skin cleansing, devitalized tissue removal, and a mark-up of the wound.

Skin Cancer Reconstruction Recovery

Post-surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery room until you are safe to be discharged. You will need a family member or friend available to drive you home in case you are still feeling some of the effects of sedation.

You should keep your surgical site clean and dry for at least 2 days after your procedure. We also recommend that you limit strenuous physical activities, specifically those that might cause you to bend down or lift, as these movements can strain the sutures.

Protect yourself from further skin injury by wearing clothing that covers the graft sites just enough to avoid aggravating them but still allows ventilation for quick healing.

How Much Does Skin Cancer Reconstruction Cost in Miami Beach, FL?

cost

The cost of Skin Cancer Reconstruction in Miami Beach is widely determined by the extent of the skin cancer, the desired outcome, the specific techniques that Dr. Rivera-Serrano chooses to use, and the degree and number of procedures necessary to meet your goals.
