Introduction to Eyelid Surgery

Your eyes say everything—whether you’re energized, well-rested, or confident. But over time, excess skin, puffiness, and drooping lids can make them look tired and aged, and sadly, no amount of eye cream or cold compresses can fully restore a refreshed appearance when sagging eyelids or under-eye bags become more pronounced. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and/or fat from the upper or lower eyelids to reveal a brighter, more alert look.

At Rivera Plastic Surgery in Miami, Dr. Carlos Rivera offers eyelid surgery customized to each patient’s natural features without looking overdone. If you have sagging upper lids, Dr. Rivera can perform the procedure to give you a subtle refreshment or improve your vision.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Think about it like eyelid reshaping. The procedure can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both and can be combined with other procedures. In some cases, the muscles that make you frown can be partially removed to smooth the lower central forehead permanently (this is called corrugator muscle resection), which will decrease the need for the use of neurotoxins (Botulinum toxin) in patients who like the wrinkle correction that these products produce.

  • An upper blepharoplasty is performed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, reducing hooding and restoring a more open, lifted appearance. Over time, the skin loses elasticity, causing the upper lids to sag, creating a tired or heavy look and, in some cases, impairing vision. Incisions are placed in the eyelid’s natural creases, so any scarring remains virtually undetectable.

  • A lower blepharoplasty targets puffiness, under-eye bags, and excess skin beneath the eyes. Fat deposits and skin laxity in the lower eyelids can contribute to shadows and hollowness, making patients look perpetually tired. Depending on the patient’s needs, this procedure can involve repositioning or removing fat, tightening the skin, or a combination of both. Incisions are made just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid for a scar-free look.

Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) is a procedure to improve the appearance of the lower eyelids by eliminating eyelid bags and/or excess skin. Surgery can be done with external or internal eyelid incisions. Excess fat is typically removed or repositioned internally. Occasionally, fat can be added in selected patients if indicated. A common adjuvant to lower eyelid surgery is a temporary or permanent lower eyelid suspension (called canthopexy or canthoplasty) to support the position of the eyelid while it heals. Lasers or peels can also improve eyelid skin texture. A personal consultation will determine what is best for you.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery offers both cosmetic and functional benefits, making it a sought-after procedure for patients looking to improve their appearance or vision. Aesthetically, it reduces sagging skin, under-eye bags, and puffiness for a more well-rested look. Upper blepharoplasty can aid peripheral vision by removing excess skin that droops over the eyes. The procedure is highly customizable, and with Dr. Rivera’s expertise, patients achieve results that enhance their natural features while maintaining a balanced, harmonious look.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Eyelid Surgery?

Patients who experience sagging upper eyelids, puffiness, or under-eye bags that contribute to an aged or fatigued appearance benefit greatly from this procedure. Those with obstructed vision due to excess eyelid skin can also benefit from an upper blepharoplasty for improved functionality, but ideal candidates should be in good health, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the results. While aging is a common cause, younger patients with genetically inherited under-eye bags or eyelid heaviness may also be good candidates. During a consultation at his Miami Beach location, Dr. Rivera evaluates each patient’s anatomy and concerns to determine the best approach to this surgery.

What’s the first step?

To have this procedure done, you’ll first need to speak with Dr. Rivera at his Miami Beach office to ensure that it’s the right treatment for your concerns and goals. Dr. Rivera will assess the anatomy of your eyelids and surrounding areas and review your medical history to ensure that you’re a good candidate for the procedure. With this information, he will develop a surgical plan that treats your areas of concern, whether it be for aesthetic reasons, functionality, or both.

This is your opportunity to ask questions. Dr. Rivera will discuss the surgery with you in detail to ensure you’re completely comfortable before proceeding. When you’re ready, you can schedule the surgery and begin pre-operative instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

This procedure is performed at Rivera Plastic Surgery for a boutique, personalized experience. Surgical prep involves re-reviewing the surgical plan, cleaning and marketing the areas for minimal incision for symmetry, and administering either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery and patient preference. Upper blepharoplasty involves an incision along the natural eyelid crease, while lower blepharoplasty may use an incision just below the lash line or inside the eyelid for a scar-free result. The surgery takes about one to two hours, after which you will recover in a private suite before returning home the same day.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Since eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, you’ll be able to begin recovery on the same day. Expect the area around your eyelids to feel tight and swollen; there may even be a bit of bruising, but these symptoms are temporary and will resolve within a few days. Cold compresses and prescribed medications help minimize discomfort, and patients are advised to keep their heads elevated to reduce swelling. While most return to daily activities within a week, bruising may take 2 to 3 weeks to subside fully. Stitches, if used, are typically removed within 5 to 7 days, and residual swelling continues to improve over several weeks.

cost

The cost of Eyelid Surgery in Miami Beach depends on the complexity of the procedure, whether the top, bottom, or both eyelids are being treated, how much fat and tissue needs to be removed, and facility and medication fees. The average price is around $3500 to $8,000. Part of your consultation with Dr. Rivera will involve a price breakdown of what eyelid surgery will cost you and your specific needs.
